Kenya’s political landscape has long been characterized by tribal affiliations, misinformation, and empty promises. Many voters make decisions based on emotions rather than policies, often influenced by populist narratives rather than leadership integrity. Recognizing this gap, Visions Magnet Theatre set out to bridge it through an innovative, engaging, and relatable approach—performance-based civic education.

The name Nitacheza Kama Mimi translates to I Will Play Like Me, a call for self-awareness and responsibility. The campaign sought to remind voters that their choices should not be dictated by external pressures but by their personal convictions, informed by facts, values, and the greater good of the country.

Instead of using conventional lectures or seminars, Nitacheza Kama Mimi took civic education to the people in the most engaging way possible—through theatre and storytelling. With puppetry, drama, and interactive performances, the campaign created real-life scenarios that resonated with Kenyans from all walks of life.

Performances were set up in marketplaces, bus stops, schools, and villages—places where everyday Kenyans could gather and participate. The plays highlighted issues such as:

  • The dangers of electing leaders based on ethnicity or handouts.
  • The importance of scrutinizing manifestos and leadership history.
  • The power of a single vote in shaping governance and development.

Audience members weren’t just spectators; they became part of the performances, engaging in discussions that challenged their perspectives and encouraged critical thinking.

For younger audiences and those who might be intimidated by direct political discussions, puppetry provided an accessible and entertaining way to pass messages. Puppets acted as neutral voices, raising key issues in a humorous and engaging manner while sparking deeper conversations among viewers.

The campaign also trained local youth and community members to lead peer discussions, ensuring the message continued spreading even after performances ended. These dialogues provided safe spaces for people to ask questions, challenge biases, and explore what good leadership truly means.

Nitacheza Kama Mimi had a profound impact on the communities it reached. Many Kenyans reported feeling more confident in analyzing candidates and making independent choices free from external influence.

The success of Nitacheza Kama Mimi proves that civic education doesn’t have to be boring or detached from real life. Visions Magnet Theatre remains committed to using performing arts to drive social change, empowering communities to make informed decisions not just in elections, but in all aspects of governance and leadership.

As Kenya moves forward, the question remains: Will we play like ourselves, making choices rooted in wisdom and foresight? The stage is set, the actors are ready, and the story is in our hands.
